New TVR's engine is so torquey it broke Cosworth's dyno

Although it’s due to arrive next year, details are still fairly scant on the upcoming new TVR, but we do know one thing: it’s got one hell of an engine.

It’s been known for a while now that car would use a Cosworth-engineered V8 engine, but it’s recently been revealed that it’s a tweaked version of the 5.0-litre Coyote V8 from the Ford Mustang.

Specific performance figures have yet to be released, but the engine produces so much torque that it shut down the dynamometer that Cosworth had been using to test it out.

Good news then for TVR fans eager to know whether the new model will stay true to the adrenalised philosophy of TVR-badged greats like the Cerbera and Sagaris.

In addition to coming with the Coyote motor, the first new TVR in eleven years will feature rear-wheel drive and a manual gearbox, while Gordon Murray is lending a hand towards its development.

Last year, TVR owner Les Edgar, who bought TVR from previous owner Nikolay Smolensky in 2013, said: “We know that a new TVR needs to be better than just good – it needs to be outstanding.

Order books open now

“From the outset we only wanted to work with the best partners in the business, and both Gordon Murray’s and Cosworth’s track records within motorsport and high performance car design speak for themselves.”

Having been in development for over a year, order books are now open for the new car, with the first 250 models already claimed even before the car has officially been unveiled.

Customers can now put down a £5,000 deposit for the new sports car, and although full details and pricing have yet to be announced it’s expected to start from around £50,000.
