The Volkswagen Up GTI has been relaunched for 2020!

Additional standard kit and a new R-Line grade have also been added.

Volkswagen has announced a number of changes to its Up! city car range, with the hot GTI model making a comeback.

The sporty GTI version of Volkswagen’s smallest model was temporarily axed from the line-up amid changes in emissions regulations, though it’s now returned. Its turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine serves up 113bhp and is paired to a six-speed manual transmission, with 0-60mph arriving in 8.6 seconds.

Changes have also been made elsewhere in the line-up, with the city car now coming with more standard kit than before. New equipment added includes a multifunctional camera with lane-keep assist, as well as smartphone integration and curtain airbags. This entry-level trim is now simply named ‘Up!’, and is priced from £12,440 with the 59bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine.

Following this is the Beats trim (from £13,490) – adding red detailing, Beats branding and a 300-watt sound system

The model continues to be available in three- and five-door bodystyles, with the Up! being the only three-door hatchback to be sold across the entire Volkswagen Group. The White and Black Editions and Beats are just sold with five doors.

After this comes the new R-Line trim level, which gains revised 16-inch alloy wheels, as well as a black roof, front fog lights and revised styling. Heated front seats and electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors are also added, with this trim available from £14,280.

Sitting at the top is the aforementioned GTI, which, on top of its enhanced performance, adds 17-inch alloy wheels, ambient lighting and the hallmark tartan upholstery. These models are available from £15,895.

The new electric e-Up! will also be joining the range shortly, which now boasts an impressive 162-mile electric range. Prices for this are expected to be announced shortly.
