World Premier: This is the All-New BMW X6

This is the All-New BMW X6 ahead of its launch at IAA

The coupe-like model now has even bolder styling than before.

BMW has pulled the covers off its new X6 ahead of the SUV’s world premiere at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

The X6 was the first of the coupe-like SUVs, with this car essentially being a curvier version of the X5. Its looks have always split opinion, but it hasn’t stopped BMW from selling nearly 450,000 examples since the original debuted in 2008.

This latest car is now even bolder to look at, and buyers can now choose to have the imposing chrome grille illuminated, which lights up at the same time as the daytime running lights. The flashy design continues at the rear, with LED strips stretching much of the way across the boot lid.

The third-generation X6 has grown by 26mm in length and 15mm in width, with a larger wheelbase and a lower ride height than before.

Three trim levels are being offered – Sport, M Sport and M Performance. Each comes with slightly revised styling, thanks to different-coloured grilles and detailing.

As for the engine choices, there’s a choice of two petrol and two diesel units. Each comes paired with xDrive all-wheel-drive and an eight-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox.

The entry-level engine is the 265bhp ‘30d’ diesel engine – a 3.0-litre unit. Those wanting a punchier diesel engine should look at the ‘M50d’ – another 3.0-litre unit, but this time it produces 395bhp and a monstrous 760Nm of torque.

The petrol options are between a 335bhp 3.0-litre ‘40i’ engine and the powerful M50i. The latter uses a 4.4-litre V8, which produces 523bhp and 750Nm of torque. Those figures allow for a 0-60mph time of just 4.1 seconds.

BMW is promising an involving driving experience from the X6’s standard-fit adaptive dampers, with drivers able to choose between comfort- or sport-oriented settings, while the performance spec M50i also comes with M-specific driver settings and self-levelling air suspension for maximum agility.

The interior is unsurprisingly similar to the X5, with a large 12.3-inch display screen being the highlight.

The new X6 is available to order now, with prices starting from £59,430 and rising to £76,870, excluding options. The first deliveries are expected to start in November.
