Toyota reveals new JPN Taxi

The new taxi was revealed before this week’s Tokyo Motor Show and uses a hybrid drivetrain.

Toyota has unveiled its new JPN Taxi, which it says “embodies the spirit of Japanese hospitality”.

Revealed before the Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota sees this as one that will greet the world as the Japanese capital prepares to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020.

The carmaker said: “We see the new model as a way of presenting Japan as a more accessible, tourist-oriented country, making its cities in particular places where everyone can enjoy barrier-free travel.”

With its design vaguely similar to the legendary London Taxi – i.e. a high roof and short overhangs – it is unmistakably a taxi, and it can accommodate any and all passengers. With a low floor, sliding door and ramp to allow wheelchair access, it offers all the features that customers expect.

The driver has access to a great field of vision thanks to large windows and well-placed pillars, while the navigation system and fare meter have been placed in view of the rear passengers so they know where they’re going and how much the trip will cost.

Powered by an LPG engine and electric motor, the hybrid system can achieve 55mpg and emit lower levels of CO2 when used in urban areas.

It features Toyota Safety Sense technologies, such as intelligent clearance sonar to detect objects in the road, and six airbags.

Coming with plenty of storage space for luggage, the taxi comes with indigo bodywork – a colour which is symbolic in Japanese culture. It is available to buy now in Japan.
