Fresh off the back of the reveal of updated versions of BMW’s premium X5 and X6 SUVs, the German firm is now back with revised versions of the powerful ‘M Competition’ versions.
Aiming to rival newer models from the likes of Audi and Mercedes, a whole range of tweaks have been implemented to ensure the sporty X5 and X6 can remain competitive in this tightly-fought class. Here we look at what’s changed.
New high-performance mild-hybrid powertrain
BMW is sticking with its characterful 4.4-litre V8 twin-turbo engine for the X5 M and X6 M, but has introduced a new 48-volt mild-hybrid system to it now – a first for a BMW ‘M’ car.
Though the 616bhp and 750Nm of torque figures are the same, BMW promises a ‘sharper response’ as a result of that mild-hybrid system, with the two SUVs able to accelerate from 0-60mph in just 3.6 seconds.
Enhanced efficiency as a result
While fuel economy on a performance SUV like the X5 and X6 M Competition models likely isn’t a priority, it’s worth acknowledging the improvements that have resulted from using the mild-hybrid system.
The electric motor and power electronics are integrated into BMW’s new eight-speed automatic gearbox, with power able to be stored in a 48-volt battery in the engine compartment, which is charged through brake recuperation and overrun.
Upgraded styling
Following on from the changes made to the regular X5 and X6, BMW is now back with upgrades for its M Competition models too. New 21-inch Jet Black alloy wheels are now fitted, while the models both feature slimmer headlights, which now run with matrix LEDs.
Also at the front is a new black area around the grille and air intakes that helps to give these SUVs even more of a muscular appearance. Three new colours are also available – Brooklyn Grey, Isle of Man Green and a matte Pure Grey finish.
Curved Display is introduced
BMW’s interiors have continued to improve in recent months, and the latest development is the new Curved Display. Already rolled out on other new BMWs, including the X1 and iX, it’s now being launched on the X5 and X6 M Competition models too.
Bringing a single piece of curved glass that integrated both a digital dial display and a large touchscreen helps to really modernise these SUVs’ interiors.
Enhanced technology levels
This update has also brought an overhaul to the level of technology on offer with these two cars. Inside, there is a new ambient light car with a crystalline surface and LED backlighting and is fully configurable.
There’s also a new rear emergency braking function offered to help avoid drivers reversing into traffic or other objects, while matrix LED headlights help to offer improved vision.
The new BMW X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition are available to order now, with prices starting from £123,350 and £126,050 respectively. First deliveries are expected in spring 2023.
