Volkswagen announces pricing for updated Polo

Popular hatchback gets a new front and and more technology

Volkswagen has announced that its updated Polo supermini is now available to order, with prices kicking off from £17,885.

It’s the first major revision to this sixth-generation Polo, which arrived on sale in 2017 and remains one of the UK’s best-selling cars. This update sees the hatchback getting a sharper front end with new LED lighting, along with a raft of new technology, including Matrix LED headlights and additional driver assistance technology.

Despite the changes, they only add £85 to the price of the Polo compared to its predecessor, with the model getting new Life and Style trim levels (replacing Match and SE L) and the familiar R-Line grade.

Standard equipment on Life cars is generous, and includes LED headlights, an eight-inch digital dial screen, electric folding mirrors and an eight-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation and smartphone mirroring. Models fitted with top-spec engines also come with Travel Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist. Because of the generous standard equipment, Volkswagen expects this entry-level trim to account for three-quarters of Polo sales.

Mid-range Style version cost from £20,785, and add larger 16-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, high-end Matrix LED headlights and a 10.25-inch digital dial system.

R-Line models are priced the same at £20,785, but instead get a sportier focus with 16-inch ‘Valencia’ alloy wheels, a racier-looking bodykit, sports seats and aluminium pedals.

At launch the engine choice consists of a entry-level 79bhp naturally-aspirated 1.0-litre petrol engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, followed by a turbocharged 1.0-litre unit that’s available with outputs of 94bhp or 108bhp. The former option gets the choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, with the more powerful version only coming with a DSG, and exclusively in the top R-Line trim level.

Volkswagen will also introduce a sporty 201bhp GTI hot hatch shortly as a sportier alternative.
