Volkswagen becomes first firm in UK to trial in-car deliveries

In partnership with Hermes, it means motorists can have parcels delivered to their boots.

Volkswagen has announced it is working with delivery firm Hermes so VW owners can have parcels dropped off in their car boot.

The trial has started in Volkswagen’s UK base of Milton Keynes, and it means that owners piloting the scheme can more conveniently have their parcels delivered.

Owners of modern Volkswagen fitted with remote access will have the option to give Hermes couriers one-off access to a car, and giving GPS co-ordinates so that the car can be found quicker. Couriers then provide photo evidence of the delivery, and confirm that the boot is securely locked afterwards.

Called ‘We Deliver’, it’s another branch of Volkswagen’s ever-growing range of connected services. Once the trial has been completed in Milton Keynes, and feedback has been monitored, VW says it will be rolled out further to other parts of the UK by the end of this year.

Claire McGreal, brand strategy and mobility services manager at Volkswagen UK, said: “We are excited to have Hermes on board as our first courier partner to trial We Deliver in the UK.

“Security is of course high on our list of priorities which is why delivery details are traceable to specific individual couriers. Should the delivery be unviable on the day for any reason – for example, there is insufficient space in the boot or the courier can’t locate the car – then the delivery will default to the user’s alternative address instead.”

The delivery is only possible to Volkswagens fitted with the ‘We Connect Plus’ package, and owners must be registered on the Volkswagen We platform.

While this is the first in-car delivery service in the UK, Volvo offers the service in the USA and Skoda operates a similar service in parts of the Czech Republic.
