Volkswagen Group to rapidly expand electric vehicle production

German car giant reveals plans to expand EV production, with target of 16 locations producing battery-powered vehicles by the end of 2022.

Volkswagen Group has announced plans to rapidly increase its production of electric vehicles, with a new electric vehicle introduced “virtually every month” from 2019.

The German car giant revealed its ‘Roadmap E’ — its path to electrifying its range — will see 16 production sites for electric vehicles operated by the firm by the end of 2022.

It also confirmed that future partnerships with battery manufacturers in Europe and China have been agreed to aid in this rapid expansion.

Matthias Müller, VW Group CEO, said: “Over the last few months, we have pulled out all the stops to implement ‘Roadmap E’ with the necessary speed and determination. Things are really moving. A change of course for the Volkswagen supertanker – full speed ahead to the future!”

The company also confirmed that new electric vehicles will be introduced on a near-monthly basis across its various subsidiaries. Müller said: “This is how we intend to offer the largest fleet of electric vehicles in the world, across all brands and regions, in just a few years.” Nine more electrified cars are planned for introduction later this year, including Audi’s e-tron SUV.

Other electric concepts in the VW Group pipeline include the long-awaited Porsche Mission E and VW I.D. vehicles — the first of which is due in 2020.
