Ahead of its public debut at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf towards the end of this month, Volkswagen has revealed its largest camper yet – the Grand California.

Based on the latest generation Crafter, the Grand California is Volkswagen’s most spacious option and comes with a complete bathroom and a large sleeping area.

Using white surfaces to create the illusion of a spacious cabin, the Grand California comes with large skylights and pop-open side windows to let as much light in as possible, and also has a blackout screen to help block it out at night.

Standard features on the model include a full kitchen and an 840x800 mm bathroom – which comes with a fold-out sink, shelves and a ventilation skylight. The kitchen comes with a 70-litre fridge-freezer, a twin-hob gas cooker and plenty of storage. The van can also carry 110 litres of water.

An electrically powered step that moves out when you open the sliding door is also fitted, as is a dining table, a connection for an external shower and a two-part mosquito net in the door.

Customers can choose to fit a bunk bed for children, a Bluetooth-integrated sound system, a roof-mounted air conditioning system, a bike rack and an awning, as well as an optional heating system. Models also come with a solar panel, a satellite dish and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The Grand California also comes with driver assistance systems, such as front assist with city emergency braking, lane assist, blind spot monitoring, rear traffic alert and park assist, as well as adaptive cruise control and rear view reversing camera.

Volkswagen will offer the model with 4Motion four-wheel drive, but the engine line-up is yet to be announced.

Pricing and availability details will be revealed at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon – which starts on August 24 – with models due to go on sale at the start of 2019.
