Volkswagen suits up Crafter for riot duty

VW Commercial Vehicles has showcased its conversion abilities with this Crafter police van.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has predicted a riot with a special conversion of its Crafter van.

This van, set to be showcased at the upcoming Commercial Vehicle Show, has been specially equipped to aid the police in coping with large disruptions.

Based on the Crafter in Trendline trim, it gains an ‘unbreakable’ (or so VW claims) plastic front windscreen, a mobile prison cell in the back and a bespoke racking system to store equipment for dealing with a riot situation.

Furthermore, there’s additional seating for seven — ensuring a full crew can ride along — while its body panels have seen some modifications in order to house robust side windows. There is of course also the blues-and-twos livery and lights to boot. Powering this Crafter is a 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 175bhp.

Steven Cowell, technical sales manager, Volkswagen Group Fleet Services, said: “We’re delighted to reveal our latest blue light conversion – a riot van based on the long wheelbase Volkswagen Crafter – after months of hard work by our dedicated team alongside our Accredited Blue Light Conversion Partner, Coleman Milne.”

Following its appearance at the Commercial Vehicle Show, taking place at NEC Birmingham from April 30 to May 2, this converted Crafter will be placed on VW CV’s ‘blue light’ demo fleet — allowing police forces to trial the vehicle.
