Volkswagen teases next ID. concept

Set to debut at Shanghai, the ID. Roomz previews upcoming all-electric full-size SUV.

Volkswagen is set to expand its all-electric ID. range with a full-size SUV.

Teased here is the ID. Roomzz, which will enter production as the next member of the ID. family that’s set to be kicked off with the introduction of the ID. hatch this year.

From these initial sketches, it’s easy to see the Volkswagen design and the car already doesn’t look too far from being in a production-ready phase.

The German firm will showcase a concept of the vehicle at the Shanghai Motor Show in two weeks’ time that gives a first glimpse at how it may turn out.

Little has been revealed in terms of specs, but it is said to be based on the same MEB platform as other ID. cars, including the Crozz, Buzz, Vizzion and Buggy. It’ll also debut ID. Pilot mode — a level 4 autonomous system, suggesting this is a car aimed squarely at taking on Tesla.

What else can we expect? Well, there’s apparently a new seat configuration to be on display here, along with customisable light — although it’s not clear if this is an interior technology or an advanced headlight technology.

“The ID. Roomzz shows us what we can expect from full-size electric SUVs in the future.” Klaus Bischoff, chief designer at Volkswagen, said; “The puristic look emphasizes the clear function and the user experience is intuitive and natural.” Consider us intrigued.

The Volkswagen ID. Roomzz concept will debut at the Shanghai Motor Show, taking place from April 16 to 25.
