Volvo is introducing WiFi to all its new models as the Swedish manufacturer looks to enhance the connectivity of its cars.

Each new 2020 Volvo will come equipped with a data SIM card, which offers 100GB of data annually. This allows for cars to be fitted with a WiFi hotspot, which, as well as offering passengers to browse on the move, can power online apps, gather real-time traffic data and also receive safety alerts. Up to eight devices can use the hotspot, and it has no impact on the phone’s data.

The SIM card is operated by Vodafone and is the most generous data plan offered by the firm in any car. For drivers who take their vehicles abroad, the SIM also works in 42 European countries thanks to automatic roaming.

Volvo has said that any customer who has already picked up a 2020MY car can return their vehicle to a main dealer and have the SIM card installed. The same feature is also available to older Volvo models, where a retro-fit option is offered to bring older models up to date.

Kristian Elvefors, managing director of Volvo Cars UK, said: “Being connected is a hugely important part of modern life, and in-car connectivity brings a whole host of benefits in terms of entertainment, information, journey planning and safety while on the move.

“By fitting a data SIM card to every new Volvo, we are ensuring that our customers can enjoy the cutting-edge technology in our cars to the full, while also making their lives easier and more enjoyable.”

The SIM is free for the first year, after which customers have to take out a further plan with Vodafone to maintain the same levels of connectivity.
