Volvo increases XC40 production by popular demand

The premium compact SUV has proved so popular that the Swedish brand had no choice but to expand the scale of its manufacturing.

After receiving almost 80,000 orders for its new XC40 SUV, Volvo has decided to expand the production of the new compact model.

Built at the brand’s Belgian Ghent and China-based Luqiao plants, the Swedish brand will be increasing the scale of manufacturing at both sites to keep up with the demand for the XC40.

After being released at the end of 2017, the XC40 won the 2018 European Car of the Year in March – the first Volvo to ever collect the accolade.

It’s built on the brand’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, which was co-developed with Geely – Volvo’s Chinese owner – and will also be the chassis for the upcoming Lynk & Co 01.

On announcing the increased production, Volvo also confirmed that the CMA will be the base for a V40 replacement model, with the platform forming the base for a range of electric vehicles. Details on these vehicles will be released at a later time.
