Volvo reveals new small car concepts

Volvo has revealed two concepts for new, small cars for the Swedish manufacturer’s range, during an event in Gothenburg.

Both concept cars are built around Volvo’s brand new platform called Compact Modular Architecture (CMA).

40.1 previews the XC40

One of the concept cars is called the 40.1 and it’s a compact crossover that reportedly previews the all-new XC40. The production version of the XC40 is expected to arrive next year.

The 40.1 concept has a hybrid powertrain which combines an 180bhp 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and a 74bhp electric motor. The maximum output of this concept car is 250bhp and the powertrain utilises front-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

This 40.1 concept plays a key role in Volvo’s new small-car strategy, described by the brand as “an essential element in its ongoing global operational and financial transformation.”

Fully-electric 40.2 concept

The other new concept revealed alongside the 40.1, also based on the CMA platform, is the 40.2, which is technically a hatchback but has an almost saloon-like body profile. The 40.2 is also a battery-run, fully-electric car with reportedly a range of up to 217 miles.

In terms of size, the 40.2 is similar to the V40 hatchback but that car and this new concept have some radical differences in design. Besides being more saloon-esque, the 40.2 also features large C-shaped taillights, and appears to have a taller ride height judging from images.

More details on production plans for both Volvo concepts are likely to be revealed later this year.
