Volvo to include Google Assistant, Apps and Maps in future cars

The next generation of Sensus will be based on Google’s Android operating system

Volvo is planning to include Google Assistant, Play Store and Maps in the next generation of its Sensus infortainment system.

Based on Google’s Android operating system, the new version of Sensus will aim to enhance how Volvo owners interact with their cars.

The system will feature embedded apps from both Volvo and Google, as well as thousands more ready to be downloaded from third party developers via the built-in Play Store.

Running on Google’s Android operating system means that new apps and software updates will be available in real time and can be automatically downloaded to the car, allowing future Volvo models to react to customer needs and offer drivers up-to-date, proactive services.

Google Assistant will provide a central voice interface for the infotainment system, allowing owners to control in-car functions, such as air conditioning, as well as changing music and sending messages hands-free. Volvo hopes this will reduce driver distraction and help motorists keep their eyes on the road.

Google Maps will offer refreshed map and traffic data in real time, keeping drivers aware of upcoming traffic and proactively suggesting alternative routes.

The announcement is a continuation of the strategic partnership Volvo formed with Google last year to broaden the range of connected services it offers to its customers.

Henrik Green, senior vice president of research and development at Volvo, commented: “Bringing Google services into Volvo cars will accelerate innovation in connectivity and boost our development in applications and connected services.

“Soon, Volvo drivers will have direct access to thousands of in-car apps that make daily life easier and the connected in-car experience more enjoyable.

“The Google partnership to be entered into is an important strategic alliance for Volvo Cars. The Android platform, Google services and Google’s working relationship with app developers, in-house and worldwide, will help us further improve the Volvo car experience.”
