Volvo XC60 wins 2019 Towcar of the Year

The Swedish SUV won the main award at the Caravan and Motorhome Club annual awards, as well as two other prizes.

Volvo’s XC60 was the big winner at the Caravan and Motorhome Club 36th annual awards, with the mid-size SUV taking home three prizes – including the 2019 Towcar of the Year title.

By winning its category – Caravan weight 1,500kg to 1,700kg – the XC60 was entered into the main prize selection, while also winning the Best Family Towcar award.

The XC60 was tested in R-Design spec with the D5 PowerPulse diesel engine fitted, which is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit producing 232bhp and 480Nm of torque. The model also comes with four-wheel drive as standard.

The weight categories were new to the ceremony this year to make it easier for customers to decide which car to buy – with every car chosen for each award tested at the Millbrook Proving Ground near Bedford.

Tested over various gradients and on the twisty ‘Alpine’ route at 55mph, each car was put through its paces to make sure it could cope with a caravan attached.

Matt Allwright, TV presenter and host of the award ceremony, said: “This was my second time being at Millbrook Proving Ground for the competition. It was great to see how the event continues to evolve in order to get the best independent information for car buyers. The testing is so thorough; the winners should rightly be proud of their achievements.”

Volvo were successful in a further segment as well, with the XC40 compact SUV winning the 1,350kg to 1,500kg category with the D4 diesel engine and all-wheel drive layout.
