Looking for a new Ford crossover or SUV? Here’s what’s on offer

Just like most manufacturers, Ford has really developed its presence in the SUV and crossover markets in recent years.

Britain’s most popular new car maker now has three crossovers in its main line-up, but it also has another pair of ‘rugged’ variants, and a new all-electric SUV is also on the way later this year.

But which model should you choose? Here we have a full run-down of Ford’s crossover SUV and crossover line-up.

Ecosport – from £18,400

Ford’s smallest and least expensive crossover is based on the Fiesta, and is a great option if you’re looking for a high-riding and low-priced crossover. Choose it in ST-Line trim with a gloss black styling pack and it also looks the part, while the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine is willing and returns a decent blend of performance and efficiency. If you’re wanting a well-equipped crossover on a budget, the Ecosport is a great choice.

Puma – from £20,415

The Ford Puma is a completely new model for 2020, and revives a nameplate last seen in the early 2000s on a Fiesta-based coupe, which was a lot of fun to drive. And, despite this new car looking completely different, that enjoyment behind the wheel is something it shares with the original Puma. There is no better car to drive in this class, while clever features such as a waterproof underfloor storage area beneath the boot floor and new efficient mild-hybrid powertrains make the Puma one of the best cars in its class. If you value driving enjoyment, choose the Puma.

Kuga – from £24,615

Another new car for Ford this year is the third-generation version of its Kuga, which was one of the earlier crossovers when it debuted back in 2008. This new model is the most innovative yet, and is available with various mild-hybrid powertrains as well as a new plug-in hybrid, too. The latter is Ford’s first PHEV car and will appeal with its 35-mile electric range and low running costs. Diesel and petrol versions are available too, while the Kuga continues to be a great choice if you’re looking for a spacious family car.

Mustang Mach-E – from £40,270

While not in showrooms just yet, the Mustang Mach-E will arrive later in 2020 as Ford’s first bespoke EV. We’re yet to get behind the wheel, but with its impressive Tesla-like interior, electric range of up to 370 miles and strong performance, we have high hopes for this new model. With a more coupe-like look and styling, unsurprisingly, inspired by the Mustang, the Mach-E is not your typical SUV.

Ford Fiesta Active – from £19,730

The Fiesta Active is not technically a ‘crossover’, but if you just want a slightly higher ride and chunkier styling, the Fiesta Active is definitely worth a look. As it’s more or less just a regular Fiesta, it remains great fun to drive, while interior space is uncompromised. A £19,730 starting price for the Active means you could have an Ecosport for less, though, or a Puma for only an extra £700.

Ford Focus Active – from £22,940

Ford also applies the ‘Active’ treatment to its best-selling Focus, too, which you can choose as both a five-door hatchback or an estate – the latter having the largest boot of any high-riding Ford model. The chunkier looks of this version look rather good, while everything elsewhere remains just as good as the regular Focus – its comfort and enjoyable drive impressing most.
