What’s new on the 2020 Renault Koleos?

Renault has given its largest SUV a big update. Here’s what you need to know.

Since 2017 Renault has had a three-strong SUV line-up, and at the top of the range is the Koleos.

This large SUV rivals models such as the Nissan X-Trail and Land Rover Discovery Sport, and is a distinctive and comfortable family SUV that has always been easy to recommend.

Renault has recently overhauled the model as part of a mid-life refresh to keep it competitive with newer rivals. So what’s new about the 2020 Koleos?

Two new diesel engines

While more SUVs are increasingly offered with petrol engines, Renault has always offered the Koleos with a diesel engine. That isn’t changing on the new car, which will be offered with the choice of two new diesel engines.

The first of these is a 148bhp 1.8-litre Blue dCi engine, which is only offered with front-wheel-drive. For those wanting more power, a 187bhp 2.0-litre Blue dCi engine will fit the bill. This version is fitted with all-wheel-drive as standard, while both engines come paired to a CVT automatic gearbox, which is known as ‘Xtronic’.

Revised styling

Renault prides itself on its cars’ styling, and in truth that is often the biggest reason why people end up buying a Renault. The Koleos has always impressed with its looks, with highlights being the bold C-shaped LED lighting signatures at the front and rear.

The facelift builds on this, with now-standard LED headlights, a larger grille and further chrome trim. Larger skid plates help to emphasise the rugged looks at the front and rear, while a new Vintage Red paint colour and alloy wheel designs join the line-up, too.

Enhanced interior

There haven’t been a great number of changes on the cabin. But this is where the Koleos always excelled, with its fuss-free cabin and class-leading passenger space. It is annoying though that Renault continues to only offer this large SUV as a five-seater.

But the update ushers in a greater use of soft-touch plastics, along with revised satin interior trim. Rear passengers will also appreciate the new reclining seats. Both the seven- and 8.7-inch touchscreens are also now available with Apple CarPlay.

Improved safety kit

Safety kit is one of the biggest advancements in recent years, and to keep pace with rivals, Renault has introduced further driver assistance features into the new model. The biggest change is the introduction of pedestrian detection to the autonomous emergency braking system. This joins adaptive cruise control and hands-free parking as standard kit.

The Koleos is available to order now, with prices starting from £28,195. First deliveries are expected in November 2019.
