But with the 2018 model, Citroen has toned down the design and made it slightly more mainstream – as well as updating the tech to make it more liveable and practical.

We take a look at the new C4 Cactus and see what makes it one of the most intriguing options on the market.

It’s gained a refreshed design

Unlike the original model, the 2018 C4 Cactus has had the shocking exterior design toned down so that it can appeal to more people. Even though the innovative and instantly recognisable airbumps on the side of the car are still present, they are further down the side and a more subtly integrated. The new design also includes the 3D-effect rear lights – which are very cool in the flesh – and a tweaked front end more in-line with recent Citroen's, including the latest C3 hatchback. It is a more low-key affair this time around, but the funky Cactus design features are still present.

This Cactus is more practical than ever

To offer more passenger space, Citroen has cleverly altered the cabin design to mean you are more comfortable than before. With only 2.6 metres of wheelbase to work with, the designers have sculpted the backs of the front row of seats to allow more rear legroom and the door panels for more shoulder and elbow room, as well as using an ‘Airbag in Roof’ system allowing for more legroom also. The boot is also very accommodating at 358 litres and that can be extended by a further 800 litres when the 60/40-split rear seats are folded down.
