What's the most fun first car you can buy?

First cars are essential to be cheap, reliable and safe but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Here’s why the Ford Fiesta ST is a great example.

Whatever you had as your first car, it is one that gives your memories that stick with you throughout the rest of your life, as it gave you freedom and independence to go off and do your own thing.

If you’re still waiting on getting your first car, there are some things you need to consider before getting it. Do you want it to be fun? Practical? Interesting? Or all of those combined?

Well, there is one car that can fit that description perfectly – the Ford Fiesta ST.

The Fiesta ST has a great car at its core and one that has been the UK’s best-seller for a considerable amount of time. That is mainly down to the Fiesta being well-sized and more than practical enough for a new driver – with a 292-litre boot that can be extended to 1,093 with the rear seats folded down.

The latest version of the Fiesta also comes with great features from standard, and when in ST spec, the supermini comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with the SYNC3 system, Recaro sports seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel and a B&O Play sound system.

Customers are also able to fit a panoramic sunroof and customisable features to the interior trim, while the Fiesta ST also gets lane keeping aid, lane keeping alert and cruise control with speed limiter.

But the two main reasons why new drivers would want to go for the Fiesta ST are its sporty looks that help it stand out from the sometimes humdrum supermini crowd, and its superb performance – in terms of both how it drives and the power on offer.

The Fiesta isn’t a dull car to look at anyway, but in ST guise it is more angular and looks sharper – in keeping with the model’s dynamic aesthetic. With larger alloys, a lip spoiler and dual exhaust, the ST has all the design elements that many younger drivers are after, and although it may not be as outlandish as previous Fiesta STs, it still looks the part.

But it’s under the bonnet where you will find the ST’s party piece – a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine that produces 197bhp and 290Nm of torque. This oomph equates to a 0-60mph time of just 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 144mph – pretty potent then.

The Fiesta ST can also come with a Quaife limited slip differential that works alongside torque vectoring technology, which ensures the driver gets the grip when they need it and a great turn-in.

It even comes with launch control – but best save that for the track, as you can’t use it at the lights unfortunately.

Prices for the Fiesta ST start from £18,995, but if you choose to pay for it on finance, Ford is able to offer it with reasonable monthly costs that make owning a sporty supermini much easier than you might think.
