We’re at the start of a new month, and that can only mean one thing. We don’t mean pay day (though that’s surely a highlight), rather the announcement of April’s best-selling cars.
So far this year, Ford’s Fiesta has been consistently topping the charts — but has that success continued? Take a look…
1 — Ford Fiesta
While Lil Nas X may have surprised the music charts last month with Old Town Road, there are no such shocks in the new car world. Again, the Ford Fiesta was the most popular choice in April for buyers — with 5,606 new examples registered last month. No confirmation on how many have been ‘driven till they can’t drive no more’, or something like that.
2 — Ford Focus
Ford’s other hatchback did well to nearly match its smaller sibling in April, with 4,565 registered. With the sporty ST coming up soon though, can the family hatch dethrone the Fiesta next time around? Watch this space…
3 — Volkswagen Golf
It’s no surprise to see the Volkswagen Golf round out the podium in April’s best-selling charts at 3,953 registrations. The German hatch has long been a favourite in the UK and, even though a new version is coming soon, it’s showing no signs of going anywhere in its current form.
4 — Nissan Qashqai
The UK’s favourite crossover continues to sell in droves, with the Sunderland-built Qashqai placing fourth overall for April following the 3,791 that were registered. It recently received a well-judged refresh, bringing efficient new engines and a revamped infotainment system to the car.
5 — Mercedes A-Class
With 3,584 new examples hitting the road, the Mercedes A-Class continues to be the premium car of choice for UK buyers. It’s no surprise either, with the car packing impressive technology such as its MBUX infotainment system into a stylish package.
6 — Ford Kuga
Ford’s hat-trick of successes in the top charts comes courtesy of its Kuga SUV, with 3,455 sold. With a new generation of the car on the horizon, don’t be surprised to see it move closer to the Fiesta and Focus later in the year too.
7 — Volkswagen Polo
Though it may be comfortably outsold by its rival the Ford Fiesta, the Volkswagen Polo still placed well last month — with 3,022 new examples finding homes. Based on the firm’s latest MQB A0 platform, the Polo offers more practicality and refinement than ever before.
8 — Volkswagen Tiguan
Placing just behind the Polo is its stablemate Tiguan, with 2,822 registered in April. It continues to impress in an ever-more crowded crossover segment, arguably being one of the most stylish cars on sale today.
9 — Vauxhall Corsa
Though the Vauxhall Corsa is soon due a replacement, sales in its current guise continue to be strong. With 2,728 registered in April, it seems buyers are still keen on the hatch — and it’s likely that number will skyrocket once the new car arrives.
10 — Hyundai Tucson
Rounding out the top 10 is the Hyundai Tucson at 2,702 new examples — an impressive feat for a car that has remained on sale in its current guise since 2015. With good practicality and Hyundai’s five-year warranty behind it, it’s hard to argue against its popularity.
