Watch the Nissan GT-R break 190mph world record drift

The iconic Nissan GT-R Nismo and drift champion Masato Kawabata have officially set a new Guinness World Record for the world's fastest drift in the UAE.

The iconic Nissan GT-R Nismo has officially set a new Guinness World Record for the world’s fastest drift, cracking a top speed of 189.5mph at an insane 30 degree angle.

Nissan is no stranger to the record books after previously setting the record for the longest twin-vehicle drift in 2014 with a pair of 370Zs in Dubai.

However, to honour the release of the latest facelifted version of the mighty GT-R, the Japanese marque has gone one step further with its ridiculous sideways speed record.

Although drifting is more about style than speed, tuner GReddy Trust modified the GT-R with a rear-wheel drive setup and bored-out the cylinders of its 3.8-litre V6 to bring displacement up to 4.0-litres.

As a result, the modified GT-R Nismo was able to produce a mammoth 1,380 horsepower channelled through the rear wheels, with Japanese drift champ Masato Kawabata behind the wheel.

The record was set at the 1.8-mile long runways at Fujairah International Airport in the United Arab Emirates, with the GT-R comfortably beating the previous record set by Polish driver Jakub Przygoński.

Having been Nissan’s flagship for nearly a decade now, it’s no surprise that the manufacturer is pulling out all the stops for its GT-R as the current generation nears the end of its lifespan.

It’s also fitting that the GT-R, revered amongst drifters and tuners for its immense power and legendary status, has taken part in its fair share of outlandish stunts in the past.

The latest 2016 version of the Nissan GT-R features new colours, new interior trim options, upgraded suspension and even more power and is due to arrive in the UK this autumn.
