When choosing which car to buy, comfort is always near the top of the list of considerations. It may not even matter how the car looks, so long as it’s nice to drive.
So we’ve put together a list of both realistic and less realistic cars to buy that are very both to drive, and be a passenger in.
Audi A8
Audi’s premium saloon seems a very simple choice in this category as the German carmaker always aims to please on the comfort-front. The latest A8 is much of the same and carries on the trend of comfortable models from the Ingolstadt-based brand. With electronically-controlled adaptive suspension, airline-style seats and superb legroom for all, the A8 is up there as one of the most comfortable executive cars.
Dacia Sandero
As one of the world’s budget cars, you wouldn’t expect it to be that refined. Surprisingly, however, the Sandero achieves excellent comfort and passenger space – all for under £10,000. Each seat offers plenty of space and cushioning, while leg room in the back is surprisingly good for such a small car. Even though it doesn’t have the same finish and style of many other vehicles, it has the substance and the Sandero is worth a look for comfort on a budget.
Hyundai i30 Tourer
Combining excellent quality seats with well-engineered suspension, the Hyundai i30 Tourer is both comfortable and practical – thanks to the gargantuan rear space. The South Korean brand has worked hard on making its cars comfortable and the i30 series has been brilliant in showing that. The Tourer model adds excellent space for all passengers, pliant suspension and well-cushioned seats, so as an affordable estate the i30 Tourer is a great option.
Jaguar XJ
Jaguars are known to be comfortable anyway, but the top end XJ is on its own level in the brand. Available in both standard and long wheelbase versions, the XJ has all the attributes to be a luxurious car, such as leather trim, well-engineered suspension and very supportive seats. Some models have rear seats that can recline and allow passengers to sit in complete comfort.
Mercedes-Benz S-Class
When looking at a comfortable cruiser that comes with the latest tech, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the first on the list. With supple adaptive suspension and premium leather seats throughout, the S-Class is always the target for other car manufacturers when making a premium executive model. With great space and legroom in all guises, the S-Class is one of the best overall cars on the market.
Peugeot 5008
The French carmaker has put a lot of effort into making its cars much more desirable and with the futuristic SUV line-up, it has done just that. The 5008 is the largest of the lot and comes with well-engineered suspension, a large amount of interior space and excellent seating with great cushioning. Although Peugeots have always had a sense of comfort, the brand has really upped its game with the latest line-up and the 5008 is an affordable option for families.
Skoda Superb
In terms of comfort per pound – if there is such a measurement – the Skoda Superb would be very close to the top. Affordable, with a capacious interior and well-finished trims throughout the line-up help to make the Superb a very smart option as a day-to-day vehicle. The estate is as cosy, if not more so, and with plenty of features and upholstery options you can make it even more comfortable if you want to.
Range Rover
For people who want a great off-roader but also want it to be civilised whenever they’re on the road, it is difficult to look past the Range Rover. Land Rover prides itself on quality and the latest version of the Range Rover is as good a premium SUV as you will see. The long wheelbase version is truly excellent in comfort terms as it has reclining seats and loads of legroom. It truly is one of the best cars to buy – even if it does start in excess of £70,000.
Rolls-Royce Phantom
The Rolls-Royce Phantom is a work of art for most motoring fans and with the latest edition, the British brand say it is the quietest ever. But less about that, and more about how it uses a large amount of leather to create beautifully crafted seats in both standard and long wheelbase, and also the extensive amount of leg and headroom each model has. With each custom built to be an individual piece, one thing that is for certain with each model is how excellently comfortable it is.
Volvo V90
Volvos are renowned for being supremely well-made, safe and fitted with excellent materials. The latest version of the V90 is no different and with superb trim finishes to all models, it is difficult to look past the estate model. The rear seats even come with integrated child booster seats, and then when they aren’t in use maintain great comfort for rear passengers. As premium estate models come, the V90 is arguably the leader in its class.
