The much-awaited new version of the Porsche Cayman GT4 has been spied testing at the Nurburgring, and is expected to stick with a naturally aspirated flat-six engine.
There’s been much debate about the new 718 Cayman and Boxster after they swapped their traditional flat-six engines for new, turbocharged flat-fours.
However, Andreas Preuninger, the head of Porsche’s GT wing, has said that there are no plans to make a turbocharged GT-badged Porsche, meaning that the new GT4 is likely to stay naturally aspirated.
Speaking to Car and Driver, he said: “Natural aspiration is one of our main selling propositions. We offer a car for people who want to feel something special, who want to have as much emotion as possible, as much throttle response and immediacy from a sports-car engine.
“And at motorsport we think that can be achieved a little bit better with a high-revving engine than any kind of turbo.”
It’s unclear exactly what engine will power the next Cayman GT4, but some have speculated that it could be a detuned version of the new 911 GT3’s 4.0-litre flat-six.
As well as that, it’s expected that the car will come with a choice of both manual and PDK automatic gearboxes, whereas the previous version pictured here came exclusively with a six-speed manual.
It's also rumoured that the car could recieve an even more hardcore RS variant, either as standard or as part of an upgrade package like the 911 GT3.
