Bentley Bentayga becomes the brand’s first diesel car

Bentley has announced a diesel-powered version of the Bentayga SUV. This derivative will launch in January 2017 and will be the first diesel production car launched by the Bentley brand.

The Bentley Bentayga Diesel uses a triple-charged 4.0-litre V8 engine which has been co-developed with Audi. It’s aided by two twin-scroll turbochargers and an electrically driven supercharger which helps to eliminate turbo lag.

Lowest CO2 of any Bentley

This new engine produces 429bhp and 900Nm of torque and leads to a zero to 62mph sprint time of 4.8 seconds, plus a top speed of 168mph. Peak torque for the diesel is the same as the twin-turbo 6.0-litre petrol W12 petrol engine, which the Bentayga first launched with.

The Bentayga Diesel also records an official combined fuel economy of 35.8mpg and CO2 emissions are at 210g/km. That CO2 output is actually the lowest of any production Bentley.

Bentley adds that the Bentayga’s Diesel has a range of up to 621 miles which, according to the brand, allows owners to “drive from London to Verbier, Bordeaux or the Scottish Highlands on a single tank”.

Set-up and styling updates

Other changes introduced for the Bentayga Diesel are minor but do include a modified exhaust system and small adjustments to the suspension to cater for the weight redistribution caused by the AdBlue tank now onboard.

A black radiator mesh, redesigned tailpipes and different badges also make the Bentayga Diesel more distinctive compared to its petrol counterpart.

Pricing for the Bentayga Diesel will reportedly start at £135,800, making it significantly cheaper than the W12 petrol version which costs just over £160,000.
