Honda unveils Sports EV Concept at 2017 Tokyo Motor Show

Revealed at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, the Sports EV uses similar design language and technology to the Urban EV

Honda has taken the covers off its latest all-electric concept model – the Sports EV Concept.

Using similar design cues and technology to the Urban EV that was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this year, the Sports EV is the coupe version and harks back to classic Honda models in design and stance.

Built on Honda’s specially-developed EV platform, this concept combines inspiration from older coupe models from the company’s history – such as the S2000 – and modern design elements, like the sleek lines and open-plan interior feel.

The two-seater uses many of the same exciting developments as the Urban EV, such as the artificial intelligence to help drive the vehicle when needed and the all-electric setup – although details are yet to be revealed.

Honda is planning that two-thirds of its vehicles sold will use some form of electrification in Europe by 2025, with the worldwide target set at 2030.

Hachigo-san, Honda CEO, said: "Honda has been developing products that will lead to the creation of a carbon free society. We will create products which will enhance convenience for the customer. This new Sports EV is a new proposal form Honda, developed to show the joy of driving in an electric car."

Both the Urban EV and Sports EV concepts were displayed at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.

Honda has said that the Urban EV will be going into full production in 2019, but no date has been confirmed for the Sports EV. It is imagined it would be a middle of the range sports model that could sit into between the Civic Type R and NSX supercar.
