Ford is updating its latest Mustang sports car with a facelift plus new technology including a new automatic gearbox. However, these updates for the Mustang aren’t expected to arrive to the UK until early 2018.
The design changes to the Mustang are small but hard to miss. The facelift gives the Ford a more angular front bumper with a chin spoiler, lower air intakes, a lower bonnet and slimmer, more sharp-looking headlights. Virtually all the exterior changes which have been made improve the Mustang’s aerodynamics, according to Ford. There are also three new exterior paint colours to choose from.
Internal changes to the updated Ford Mustang include upgraded suspension with better shock absorbers to deliver improved ride quality. Other parts like the cross-axis jount and stabiliser bars have been updated to improve the Mustang’s handling.
Customers can add a Mustang Performance Package to the facelifted Ford, which adds the likes of adaptive dampers, an improved exhaust note and a rear spoiler.
New ten-speed gearbox introduced
The Ford Mustang retains both the 5.0-litre V8 and 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engines as part of its facelift. The new gearbox, which is available with both engines, is a ten-speed automatic which comes with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
It promises to deliver considerably quicker and smoother gear changes than any previous gearbox seen in a Mustang. The new gearbox also allows the driver to alter the set-up of the car through three selectable drive modes.
Updates have also been made to the Mustang’s interior, the main one being a digital dashboard to replace the dials found on the pre-facelift Ford. The new dash display, which comes with some personalisation features, is also set to feature in the new Ford GT supercar.
When the updated Mustang arrives in the UK market, a small price increase can be expected. It will likely start from just over £32,000 in hard-top Fastback form or from just over £36,000 for the convertible.
