Volkswagen Electric Minivan Will Enter Production

Volkswagen has announced plans to put its I.D. Buzz all-electric minivan into production, after revealing the concept at the Detroit Auto Show back in January 2017.

Volkswagen has revealed production plans for the I.D Buzz all-electric minivan, which takes some styling cues from VW’s iconic Camper van.

Originally revealed as a concept during the Detroit Auto Show in January, VW has officially announced the mass production of their rejuvenated microbus.

Talking to Auto Express, VW boss Herbert Diess stated “emotional cars are very important to the brand. We are selling loads of Beetles still, particularly in the U.S. markets. But we will also have the Microbus that we showed, which we have recently decided we will build.”

After agreeing to pay $4.7 billion for environmental programmes and the promotion of zero-emissions vehicles following the dieselgate scandal, VW is definitely taking steps to become a more eco-friendly car manufacturer.

Reported by Digital Trends, the microvan is said to be powered by a pair of electric motors that generate 369bhp to all four wheels with a battery range of 270 miles. The I.D Buzz is also rumoured to have an autonomous driving feature, with a retracting steering wheel – a clear step toward the future of automobiles.

Whilst the design is reminiscent of the Camper van that grew into a huge hit in the sixties, the I.D Buzz is set to be built off of Volkswagen’s MEB modular electric platform - the base for all of VW’s electric fleet.

Although the Microvan I.D Buzz is yet to be given a release date, online reports indicated it could be released in 2021.
