VW officially announce the production of all-electric Microbus

After revealing the I.D Buzz as a concept during the Detroit Auto Show back in January, Volkswagen have officially announced the production of their all-electric Microbus which will launch in 2022.

After revealing the I.D Buzz as a concept during the Detroit Auto Show back in January, Volkswagen have officially announced the production of their all-electric Microbus which will launch in 2022.

Based on the iconic Camper Van, the technological rebirth will see the manufacturer move toward a more eco-friendly future – a much needed step after last year’s dieselgate scandal.

After the concept was showboated at global motor shows in Detroit and Geneva, VW received several letters and emails from customers who asked the manufacturer to “please build this car,” stated Volkswagen CEO Dr Herbert Diess.

The production of the vehicle was announced at the 2017 Concours d'Elegance in Pebble Beach, California – a fitting location considering the iconic camper van has been an item of style around Venice Beach since the 50’s.

But what can we expect from this all-electric model? Rumoured to powered by a pair of electric motors that generate 369bhp to all four wheels with a battery range of 270 miles, VW have stated the vans batteries will be built in to the floor providing a more spacious drive.

Because of this, Diess explains; "The vehicle therefore looks like a short compact van on the outside, even as it offers the generous interior space of a large van."

The production level I.D buzz is also said to have many of the concepts’ features including variable seating, interactive connectivity and highly automated driving. But it seems the I.D Buzz is just the start…

During the reveal, Volkswagen also announced plans to add more variations to the line-up with an I.D Buzz Cargo model designed especially for “zero-emission delivery operations” set to be in the works after the Microvan’s launch.

With the I.D Buzz launching in 2022, it seems VW’s all-electric future is firmly in place.
